On the quest for the perfect taupe shadow!

Okay so here it is.  I am a neutral loving eyeshadowing wearing kind of girl.  I have LOTS of eyeshadow colours (some would say too many but is there such a thing?), but the ones I reach for the most are primarily neutrals.  Having said that, most of my neutrals are in the brown family.  What I really have been on the hunt for is the perfect taupe.  The taupe that I can wear on my lids, blend it up a little and call it a day!

Taupe is a funny one.  You can say 'lilac' and everyone instantly knows the colour you're referring to, not so with taupe.  So to be clear the taupe I'm looking for is more grey than brown, more cool than warm and more purple undertones rather than red.  This is where you all come in.  I need some taupe recommendations.  These are the shadows I currently have that are close to what I'm looking for;

Annabelle Haute Chocolate Trio; Youngblood mineral shadow in Haze;
NARS Ashes to Ashes
Here are the swatches, as best as I could do anyway, taupe swatches are hard!

Annabelle      Youngblood     NARS

The Annabelle trio is called Haute Chocolate, but the lighter shades are more taupe than chocolate.  The swatch above is of the lightest color in the trio, and it is close to what I'm looking for.  I think if the light and the medium colors in this trio were mixed, it might be just right.  This is a matte shade but not chalky, easy to apply and affordable, it's just a little too light & I don't want to always have to blend the shadows.

The Youngblood is a new purchase for me, as some of you may remember from last week.  I do love this shadow but I think it's a better crease color than all over lid color.  As you can see it's much darker than the other two and has a slightly red undertone.  Bring this shade down a little and it would be just right.

NARS Ashes to Ashes is the one I had the highest hopes for in my taupe quest.  I do like it but it's got shimmer in it, and needs a few coats to show up on my eyes.   The more you add, the more shimmery it gets.  This makes it just a little too much for me, for an everyday look.  I do wear it on my lids during the day, but I always need a matte shadow to tone it down a bit.  It also tends toward brown more than grey, which is likely hard to see here.

So there is where I'm at.  I need your help and suggestions to help me in my quest.  I'd like to see if I can find that one perfect taupe that could be my go to no brainer everyday color.  So please let me know your taupe favourites or taupe suggestions!

  1. Oh, now I feel tempted to join your perfect taupe quest. I have the MUFE Aqua pot in "Taupe" but after it showed up orangey on a picture, I just don't like the way I used to. I agree that a darker version of the Annabelle shadow would be perfect.

  2. I love taupe, it's an all-time fave eyeshadow colour for me. I like MAC's "satin taupe" and have used it for almost 15 years, Maybelline's Stylish Smokes quad in "natural smokes" and NYX's trio TS03 (nude, taupe, dark brown)

  5. Hmmm... that's a tough one! My current favorite taupe eyeshadow is Too Faced Eyeshadow in Sitcom Siren. It's a great everyday color when you're too lazy to do a complete eye look, it looks great applied all over the lid, and maybe with a hint of eye liner (=

  6. I like MAC's Satin Taupe, or MAC's Paint Pot in Vintage Selection but have you tried NARS Cairo? There's also a really great shade in the 28 Neutral Palette if you would consider getting it :)

  7. @Tracy D: Wet N Wild Nutty? Although it has shimmer in it, but it is one of my faves. Bobbi Brown Mica is great too, and for really high end Burberry Rosewood-that one is my ultimate shadow for an easy look.

  8. Priscilla - Yah defining taupe is tough, if you find that eyeshadow name let me know :)

    Gaby - I've noted that one, thanks. I'll give it a swatch!

    Yu-That's 2 votes for Satin Taupe, I like the look of that online at least. I've noted the others! I don't have the 28 neutral palette but I've always wanted it, maybe now is my reason to get it :)

    Tracy - Nutty is a little too shimmery and reads a little too brown for my taupe go to color, I do like it though. I will check out BB b/c I love her shadows, Burberry might be out of range for me :)

  11. Charlotte - I haven't been able to get Silent Treatment yet but I do love the look of the taupe in that trio..as long as it's not too shimmery :)

  13. It may not give the effect you are looking for but i recommend you swatch Heather Mauve Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow by Bobbi Brown. I'm cool toned and wear it quite easily, it has an almost silver tone to it. Easy to blend but does have shimmer so you'd hvae to check out if it was too much for you :)

  15. I was going to suggest Satin Taupe as well until you said you didn't want the shimmer. It sounds like exactly what you're looking for-I even keep it in my purples pallet

  18. lilqtpy85 - I am going to check out Satin Taupe for sure, some shimmer is okay & you're the 3rd vote for that shade!

    Andree - Those are some great suggestions lady and I'd love to see your taupe post :)

  19. I think NARS Bali is cool toned taupe kinda shade. It's matte n has a lot of pigment so u only need a light amount. I also recommend mac coquette and copperplate, those two are both in the same color family. I find those cool toned on my skin and their both matte.

  20. Valerie - Thanks for the recommendations, I will note them in my growing taupes to try list :)

  21. I am on a search too for the perfect taupe matte eye shadow single! I found one that I love in the Mally In the Buff 2 Palette from QVC. It is beautiful taupe color with a hint of purple. There is also a beautiful taupe in the Nars Andy Warhol Flowers 3 Palette that was limited edition. You can still find that palette on ebay. I also love the MAC Satin Taupe but this doesn't cut it when I am looking for a matte eye shadow for blending and the crease. Thanks for all the ideas!
