Clinique's Bottom Lash Mascara - review!

When I first heard about this I was really curious & excited to try it.   This was the first I had heard of a mascara specifically designed for just your bottom lashes...genius really.

I don't know about you but I don't need, or want, the look of really long spidery bottom lashes, but I do like them defined.  I find with a lot of my mascaras that the wand is a great size for the top lashes, but then too big & bulky for the bottom.  Which can result in some clumpy looking lashes or spots of mascara below my lower lash line..neither is preferable.  I also find that sometimes there is just too much length, resulting in that feathery look that I don't prefer.   Typically I end up pulling off excess mascara with my finger tips to avoid this.  Don't judge me if this is weird.

Anyway, I set off to try this after reading a bit about it on the Clinique website.  This is what it looks like;

My pinky nail for comparison!
How freaking adorably cute is that little brush, it is so teeny, tiny.  Which is one of the things I love about it.  Despite being so small, I found this was actually quicker to apply on my bottom lashes, than a regular wand mascara, because it is so precise.  You can cover even the tiniest of lashes with this little wand.  I can go over my lashes quickly & easily and get a perfectly defined look every time. I've never had an issue with clumping..really how could you?  It also didn't flake or leave any residue, after a full days wear.

I attempted to get some photos of my bottom lashes to show you this mascara in action.  I hope you appreciate how hard this was for me and Mr. J., total comedy of errors!  I need to work on my eye photos so bear with me here.
This is me without any mascara, or eye makeup I might add.  The things I won't do for this blog!

This is about one & a half coats, gone over in a few spots but that's it!
Sorry for the exposure, quality, etc., but I hope you get the idea.  I have only the bottom lash mascara on, nothing on the top lashes.

This cost me $12CAD and I think it's worth it.  This comes in Black and Black/Brown.  I know some people may think that it's a pain to use two mascaras, and yes okay that is a valid point.   Honestly though that doesn't bother me because this is so quick to use & just makes applying mascara to your bottom lashes so much easier!

The other thing that I love this mascara for, is those little lashes at the very outer & inner corners of your lash lines, both top & bottom. This works like a dream for that.  I love highlighting those lashes, it just adds such a nice pop to your eyes when these lashes are defined and this is the perfect tool to do that.   Overall I would give it a thumbs up!

Have you tried this mascara?  What do you think?

  1. I just saw this at Sephora and my sister and I were just adoring it so much. I was debating on getting it because Asians have no lashes so I have a hard time even finding my bottom lashes. After reading your review I'll have to try it now. Thanks for the review. :)

  2. I've been wanting this because so many people have said good things about it! I'm surprised at how inexpensive it is, and the point about being able to reach the lashes on the edge is a massive plus for me! :) Will go pick it up some time I think! :)

  3. @Pam - I think that anyone who has sparse eyelashes will love this, it can bring out even the tiniest of lashes!

@MakeYuUp - I thought it was inexpensive too, that is what convinced me to try it, not like a typical Clinique mascara..although it is tinier.

  4. What a novel idea this is .. I like it! Not a bad price either ...I like that it doesn't look clumpy at all, too!

  5. It was only a matter of time before someone came up with this idea! Great review, I'm interested in trying!

  6. Great review, I've been hearing so much about this mascara. Love the little brush, why didn't they think of this earlier?
I usually stick with my elf mascara for my bottom lashes (because the brush is so long, skinny and narrow) but I'm going to have to try this!

  8. @Andree - Yes! And you're right..such a great little find :)

@Nikosmommy - I used to do the same thing, save my smallest brushes for the bottom lashes, this one beats any small brush you can find...I promise.

@Marie - Next Clinique promo (I think you said you already got the latest one) be sure to add this to your basket!

@Kim - Not at all clumpy, the brush is so small that it would be hard to clump up, or goof up :)

  10. I bought a bottom lash mascara from Tarte a couple of years ago but really didn't like it. I found the formula to be really flakey and didn't find it made a difference on my bottom lashes. The clinique mascara has a much longer wand which I think would be much more helpful and the price is also a lot better. I will definitely be trying this one out. Thanks for the review and photos.

  11. This sounds great. I'll have to give it a try.

You & Mr. J must have been cracking up doing these pics. Did he know he was signed up as the beauty buys blog sidekick?

So I didn't have any luck finding ELF makeup at Zellers last week.

I went to three Shopper's before I found the Kibio. Once there the sales clerk talked me in to trying the samples first. Weird that she didn't try to sell it to me. Anyway, I really like it. The smell reminds me a of a cream I wore on the trip to Australia. (How do I remember the cream I wore but nothing about my trip?) I also love how light it is. The only drawback is that it doesnt have SPF. Not sure that will work with my skin!

Also, I did find the roller ball display and tried the one you suggested. I was concerned about it affecting my allergies, but I didn't notice anything. I love that laundry fresh smell! May have to go back & get this one.

    Later!

  12. FairyGirl - Oh Mr. J had no idea what he signed up for & you can just picture it I'm sure. A lot of 'what the hell is that', 'are you trying to make me look horrible', 'can you not jam the camera right in my eye'....it was a day alright. Excited you got the Kibio, you have to go to Shoppers with Beauty Bars to find it. Most of those types of products don't have SPF, but you can use it as a night time moisturizer & find a daytime one that has an SPF in it. Glad you liked the rollerball...and I'll keep my eye out for some ELF for you chica :)

  13. @April - Thanks! Hope you like it if you decide to try it :)

@Alicia - I've worn it several times now & had no issues with flaking. Let us know if you try it!

  15. I don't really get the idea besides this mascara. It's expensive, it smalls, and I never but mascara on my bottom lashes, as it only draws attention to my fine lines. Plus, it's easy to just lightly swipe a coat of a "normal" mascara on the bottom lashes.

  16. Gaby - Well I guess you won't be buying this anytime soon then. I think putting mascara on my bottom lashes actually hides some fine lines, but to each her own ;)

  17. I saw an add for this recently and would love to try it! I never used to wear bottom lash mascara but have been using my Maybelline falsies on top & bottom lashes lately and love the look! I will deff try it!! great post!

  18. Thanks Emily! If you're a bottom lash wearing girl I think you'll really like it :)

  20. Juicy lady - No it doesn't say it's waterproof but I had no issues with smudging :)
